The Asylum Seekers Centre (ASC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Abang Anade Othow as the new Deputy Chair of its Board.
Abang has served on ASC’s Board for almost two years, and steps up following the departure of former Deputy Chair, Clare Petre.
As a leading refugee advocate, Abang has served as an ambassador for organisations such as the Refugee Council of Australia, Red Cross, and Oasis Africa, and is a respected public speaker.
Her experience also includes a long-standing teaching career and pro bono, tailored coaching to help refugees and migrants navigate employment opportunities through Glow Up Careers. She is currently writing her first book.
Abang will work with Chair of the Board, Peter Waters, and the rest of the ASC Board to guide the organisation in delivering on its 2024-28 Strategic Plan, which includes greater systemic advocacy, innovation in service delivery, financial sustainability, and increased participation and leadership of people with lived experience.
Abang Anade Othow, said “I’m excited and honoured to step up to the role of Deputy Chair on the ASC board.
“The work of the ASC has never been more important or urgent, and the board plays an important role in guiding the organisation’s direction while providing valuable experience and expertise.
“I’m looking forward to working further with Peter, Frances, and the Board to continue the ASC’s proud record of welcome, support, community and impact for people seeking asylum.”

“Her unrivalled expertise, advocacy, and vision will be vital as we continue to evolve as an organisation, while her lived experience as a refugee provides a much-valued and respected perspective.”
