LGBTQIA+ Support Program

A safe space to be yourself and connect with community.

You are welcome here

Open to Asylum Seekers Centre clients, this program welcomes members who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Asylum Seekers Centre’s LGBTQIA+ Support Program offers peer connection, community building, and affirming support in a trauma-informed, confidential environment. We recognise that many LGBTQIA+ people seeking asylum have experienced persecution, stigma, and loss, and that a supportive community can be vital for wellbeing and resilience.

WHAT WE OFFER

Our peer group provides opportunities to:

  • Share experiences and learn from each other in a safe, supportive environment
  • Connect with the community organisations, health services, and trusted experts
  • Enjoy shared meals, activities, and events that build connection and belonging
  • Learn about and access gender-affirming information and services

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Regular group catch-ups (in-person or online, depending on availability) facilitated by the Asylum Seekers Centre’s LGBTQIA+ Community Coordinator
  • Interpreters and additional support can be arranged where possible
  • Support with referrals and connections to external support services

Get in touch

Hear from our community:

“Waiting for your protection visa can be very scary because of uncertainty. With the support from my peer group, I can learn from others, get advice, and know I am not the only one who is going through this.”

– Kriz*, a person seeking asylum and member of the LGBTQIA+ Support Program
