“Continuation of selective human rights” as Australian government announces Nauru deportations

February 18, 2025

The Asylum Seekers Centre is deeply concerned by the announcement that the Australian government will deport people released from indefinite immigration detention by the High Court to Nauru.

The move is permitted under brutal new laws passed late last year, which enable an expansion of offshore warehousing and give the government the power to overturn existing protection findings.

Asylum Seekers Centre CEO Frances Rush OAM said:
“This sends a clear message. If the government of the day doesn’t approve of a person or group of people, they are not welcome in our country.

“This isn’t an isolated move, it is the continuation of selective human rights based on where you were born.

“The rule of law must apply equally and fairly. Australian principles of fairness and equity must be put before populism and polls.”

The Australian government must ensure its policies are in line with human rights standards and Australia’s obligations under international law.
