“Cruel, callous, and cowardly”: Albanese government signs secret deportation deal

SYDNEY, Saturday 30 August 2025 — In response to the Albanese government’s move to sign a secret $400 million deportation deal with Nauru, the following statement can be attributed to Elijah Buol OAM, Asylum Seekers Centre CEO:
“As Australians embraced their weekend, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke quietly jetted off to Nauru not for diplomacy, but to ink a covert $400 million agreement. The deal, hidden from public scrutiny, paves the way for the forced removal of hundreds of individuals seeking safety to conditions that may be unsafe and unjust.
“This deportation arrangement is nothing short of cruel, callous, and cowardly.
“It is yet another assault in the Albanese government’s relentless attacks on migrants, refugees, and people seeking asylum.
“Instead of fostering cohesion and compassion, this government is deepening trauma, and betraying the values of fairness and unity Australians have just voted to uphold.”
