The 2022 election is a critical moment for refugees and people seeking asylum.
The people of Wentworth have an important role to play in winning support at this election for fair policies for refugees.
This forum will give candidates the opportunity to state their positions and make commitments on their refugee policy priorities.
Allegra Spender, Independent, Tim Murray from Labor and Dominic WY Kanak from Greens have agreed to attend.
All candidates in the seat of Wentworth were invited to attend.
Now is the time to raise your voice and make sure fair policies for refugees and people seeking asylum are front and centre of the campaign.
Sitting MPs, candidates and the political parties need to know there’s widespread community support for the government to introduce a more compassionate and generous refugee policy in Australia.
The people of Wentworth experienced this influence in the 2018 election when their votes enabled Kerryn Phelps to introduce the Medevac Bill which got many refugees access to critical healthcare that was denied to them in offshore detention.
In just the last few weeks, the diaspora community from Afghanistan have won 16,500 new humanitarian places for people escaping violence and persecution.
Dozens of refugees brought here from PNG and Nauru for medical care have won their freedom from indefinite detention, joining over 200 people released since December 2020.
And the brave advocacy of people with lived experience of seeking asylum played a critical role in the abandonment of dangerous, divisive changes to our migration laws – for now.
