The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to all Australians to walk alongside First Nations people in a movement for a better future.
The Asylum Seekers Centre gratefully accepts this invitation and in our actions and words commits to support the call for truth, treaty and voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
In 2022, the ASC established our first Reconciliation Action Plan to guide our activities towards reconciliation, inclusion, understanding and respect.
In 2023, we are committing to support a YES vote on the Voice to Parliament at a referendum of the Australian people.
As a human rights organisation, our work affirms the basic human rights of people to freedom from persecution, violence and discrimination. We strongly advocate against systemic injustices that prevent people from determining their own lives and future.
As we extend our respect, provide support and say ‘welcome’ to people seeking asylum arriving in Australia, we do so in a deep acknowledgement and recognition of First Nations people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands in which people seek safety.
We have joined a coalition of civil society organisations called Allies for Uluru to collectively demonstrate leadership within our communities.
We hope that our community will join us in making history this year to bring about historic change to the Australian constitution that will open our ears to the voices of First Nations people.
The question to be put to the Australian people at the 2023 referendum was announced and it will be:
“A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”
