The Albanese government is attempting to rush through a draconian deportation and surveillance Bill. Introduced in the wake of the High Court ruling that forcing people released from immigration to wear ankle bracelets and live under curfews is unlawful, this Bill subverts both the intentions of the High Court and the human rights of refugees and people seeking asylum.
If passed, the Bill would have devastating consequences, including:
- Separating people from their families and communities in Australia, preventing them from ever returning to their homes
- Creating an expanded regime of offshore detention where people would be subjected to serious harm
- Exposing people seeking asylum to the risk of being deported to countries where they face persecution, including people who have been through flawed and unfair legal processes
- Reintroducing invasive monitoring conditions that infringe people’s liberty and personal dignity
- Allowing the Albanese government to ignore its international obligations and legal responsibility for inflicting harm
It continues a pattern of rushed and brutal legislation, mimicking elements of the draconian deportation and entry ban bill which stalled in the Senate earlier this year. This pattern is fuelling a race to the bottom and contributing to fear-mongering within our community.
The new Bill must be stopped in its tracks.
