‘Cruelty codified’: Albanese government passes trio of brutal migration bills

This trio of legislation is cruelty codified.
In passing these bills, the government has added another sad chapter to our country’s history of division and cruelty.
This is a heartbreaking outcome for the people targeted by these bills, who will feel it profoundly.
It is a blatant grab for votes on a platform of fear and division. This is monumentally out of step with Labor’s election platform for a humane and compassionate approach to refugees.
The next chapter must be written by those who value fairness and justice – and who respect and uphold our international obligations.
It will not be easy, but it has never been more necessary.
