YOUR LEGACY

Make a gift in your will

Leaving a legacy ensures your values and hope for a better world continue even after you are gone. At the Asylum Seekers Centre we know the impact gifts in Wills – no matter how big or small – can make to people seeking safety in our community. A gift in your Will leaves a legacy of humanity, kindness, fighting for human rights, and standing up for people in our community who often fall through the cracks of a broken system.

Online Will Writing Platform

The Asylum Seekers Centre has partnered with an online Will writing platform called Willed. It’s free to use and you may find it useful. You can find out more by visiting www.willed.com.au/ascsydney

Type of Bequest

There are a number of ways you can leave a gift to the Asylum Seekers Centre, depending on your circumstances and preference.

  • Residuary Bequest: This is the most effective way to leave a bequest to the Asylum Seekers Centre. It is a gift of what remains after you have made provisions for your loved ones. A residuary gift will keep up with inflation.
  • Percentage Gift: Leaving a percentage of your estate allows you to decide what proportion of your total estate you would like to give to the Asylum Seekers Centre. A percentage gift will also keep up with inflation.
  • Pecuniary Bequest or Specific Sum: A pecuniary bequest is a fixed sum of money to be left to the Asylum Seekers Centre. This type of gift will not keep up with inflation.

Language

Here are the three most effective options for leaving a bequest to the Asylum Seekers Centre in your Will. Any of these options will ensure your bequest is not eroded by inflation.

“I give and bequeath to the Asylum Seekers Centre, (ABN 47 164 509 475) Becher House, 43 Bedford Street Newtown NSW 2042,

  • the residue, or
  • [……] percent of my whole estate, or
  • [……] percent of the residue, or
  • the specific sum of $[……]

to be used for its general purposes. I declare that the receipt of an executive officer at the time, shall be sufficient discharge of my executor’s duty.”

FAQs

Our legal name is the Asylum Seekers Centre and our ABN is 47 164 509 475

Is it easy to add the Asylum Seekers Centre to my existing will?
Yes it is. If you already have a will, you can add a codicil to include your bequest.

Can I direct my gift to an existing program?
There are many people who’ve donated their time and money to specific areas of our work. However, the only certainty we have about the future is that there will always be more people seeking asylum who need our help, so we ask that you allow the ASC to decide how best to use your gift once it has been received, according to our community’s needs at that time.

Can I create a page in memory of a loved one, who cared deeply about the safety and security of people seeking asylum?
Yes, we have a step-by-step guide to make it easy to create an “in memorium” page on our website.
