Join with us on Refugee Week Movie Night: 20 June 2020

The Asylum Seekers Centre is coming together to mark Refugee Week in a very different way this year, with an at-home movie night.

The event will raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrate the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society. It will also raise funds for the practical services that the Asylum Seekers Centre provides to people seeking asylum in New South Wales – including a foodbank, emergency accommodation and financial assistance, legal services, casework, a primary health clinic and employment services.

How to join in

To join the event on 20 June, sign up here and make a donation. You will immediately receive a five-page PDF that is your movie night kit, containing talkings points, recipes and film recommendations. Pick whether you’re watching with adults or children and the kit will be tailored to you.

On 20 June, you will receive an email with video content to watch before your film. If you’re watching with adults, you’ll receive an exclusive interview with Hearts and Bones director Ben Lawrence and actor Andrew Luri and Asylum Seekers Centre CEO Frances Rush. If you’re watching with kids, you’ll receive a video of storytelling session with a multilingual storyteller. After viewing the preview video, watch a film of your choice.

Don’t forget to take a selfie of your movie night set-up – with your family, housemates, or pets – and tag the Asylum Seekers Centre on Facebook!

Hearts and Bones

The Asylum Seekers Centre has partnered with the creators of new Australian film Hearts and Bones, starring Hugo Weaving, to present Refugee Week Movie Night.

The film tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a traumatised war photographer (Hugo Weaving) and a South-Sudanese refugee (Andrew Luri) when they discover a link that intertwines their pasts.

If you sign up to join Refugee Week Movie Week with adults only, you will receive an exclusive Q&A preview video with director Ben Lawrence, actor Andrew Luri and Asylum Seekers Centre CEO Frances Rush. If you choose to watch it on 20 June, you can rent or buy it on iTunes, Google Play, Bigpond Movies, Fetch, Foxtel Movies, Telstra Movies and more.
