At the Asylum Seekers Centre (ASC), welcome often begins with Zeynep Ekim Elbaşı Gözoğlu or Ekim, our Senior Welcome and Registration Coordinator.
Leading a team that serves as the first point of contact for people seeking asylum that come through our doors, Ekim ensures that people are met with warmth and empathy.
As a mother, passionate social justice advocate, and someone who remains calm under pressure, her work plays an essential role in the ASC’s mission to create a welcoming environment for all.
The importance of feeling welcome
“There is no other way than to welcome them to help them feel safe,” Ekim says, capturing the heart of her work.
“They [people seeking asylum] have left their homes, jobs, and families to come to a completely different country, which can be deeply traumatic. These people are traveling to an unknown future without their past networks, connections, or loved ones.”
Ekim’s team acts as the first port of call and a central place to ensure people are properly directed to the services and resources they need. They also oversee the distribution of essential items like laptops and cell phones.
The responsibility is immense, but Ekim and the team’s ability to handle this with empathy and attention to detail leads to better outcomes for every person who comes through the ASC’s doors.
A passion for social justice
Ekim’s passion for social justice runs deep.
Her father was an activist so at a young age, Ekim learned the importance of standing up for people whose voices are often silenced.
“I was born and raised in a family that stood against injustice and dreamed of a better world,” she shares.
This background inspired her work in making that better world a reality by fighting for human rights and standing with people seeking asylum.
Community of welcome
Ekim shares that she draws her energy and drive from the amazing team members and volunteers she works with.
“I love the people around me—whether they are clients, volunteers, or colleagues. It’s incredibly inspiring to work with such kind and passionate people who give me hope.”
In a world where people seeking asylum face immense challenges, Ekim and her team provide more than just logistical support—they offer a sense of belonging.
“Feeling welcome can make all the difference.” Ekim says.
“For people seeking asylum, it provides motivation, a sense of belonging, and the strength to keep moving forward.”
“Doing our job properly with empathy and attention to detail leads to higher quality outcomes and happy clients.”
Small actions make a big difference
Ekim’s commitment to social justice extends beyond her daily work.
“As the election approaches, I believe one of the most important things is voting for fair policies,” she says.
She encourages others to support the work of organisations like the ASC, whether through volunteering, donating, or advocating for people seeking asylum in their communities.
“Big differences begin with small steps,” Ekim believes, underscoring how collective action can lead to meaningful change.
A champion of dignity and hope
Ekim’s unwavering commitment to creating a welcoming environment for people seeking asylum is a reminder that empathy is not just a feeling—it’s a call to action. To choose welcome. To fight for social justice. To build a community of hope.
