A Million Stories: One shared future
Australia is officially celebrating One Million Stories, a momentous national recognition of the extraordinary journeys of refugees who have made this country their home since the end of the Second World War.
This historic milestone honours nearly eight decades of welcome, resilience, and profound contribution to the Australian community.
To mark the occasion, a commemorative postage stamp was officially launched by Her Excellency the Honourable Samantha Mostyn AC, Governor‑General of Australia, during a ceremony at Government House in Canberra.
Delivered in partnership with Australia Post, the Refugee Council of Australia, and the Department of Home Affairs, the event brought together community leaders, sector partners, and individuals with lived experience of displacement.
The Asylum Seekers Centre’s CEO and former refugee, Elijah Buol OAM, joined leaders from across the sector and the Governor‑General to mark this historic moment.
“Reaching the milestone of one million refugee stories is a profound testament to Australia’s capacity for compassion. Every single one of these stories represents a journey from the darkest corners of displacement to the bright possibility of a new beginning. When we open our doors, we unlock human potential.”
Weaving the fabric of our nation
The celebration serves as a powerful reminder that every story of safety and rebuilding actively strengthens the social and cultural fabric of Australia. Reflecting on the deeper meaning of this milestone, Buol added:
“This is a look back at our generous, compassionate history. But it is also a roadmap for our shared future. The resilience of refugees has shaped modern Australia into a vibrant, prosperous society. Our task now is to ensure that the next chapter of our national story continues to be defined by welcome, opportunity, and unity.”
Our ongoing commitment to welcome
At the Asylum Seekers Centre, welcome has always been at the absolute heart of our mission. As Australia celebrates these One Million Stories, we honour the immense courage, strength, and contributions of the refugees and migrants who have shaped this country since 1947.
Their enduring resilience inspires our work every single day as we continue to help write the next million stories of hope and home.
